SEAN CONNERY IS JAMES
James Bond is definitely one of the most important characters in the history of cinema and a mens style key icon. Sean Connery inaugurated the long-running 007 franchise with 1962’s ‘Dr. No’ and remained the prototypical secret agent for decades. Author Ian Fleming initially disagreed but he changed his tune after seeing that film and even inserted Scottish heritage into Bond’s background in subsequent novels. It was Connery himself who defined the role and set in stone the archetype for all others to follow.
We could identify three kind of Connery looks in the films: tuxedo (with long-barreled Walther pistol), suit (two or three pieces) and sport (knit, shirt and chinos). Suits were usually tailored in a false plain fabric getting a subtly and understated elegance, mixing with plain shirts and ties.
Ian Fleming made sure to give the world’s most famous super agent a wristwatch in his novels. ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’, published in 1963, he offers a very precise description of this watch, a Rolex Oyster Perpetual on a metal bracelet. James Bond wore that brand until 1995´s ‘Goldeneye’, when Omega became the new 007 sponsor.
But Bond most important accessory is clearly his car. You can find several articles and blogs talking about all the brands and models the agent has driven in all the movies: Aston Martin, Lotus, Ford Mustang, BMW…
In ‘The Man with the Golden Gun’ novel, Fleming wrote about a 007 underwear when he talks about a fresh pair of sea island cotton underpants. He is undoubtedly referring to the woven boxer short style. In ‘Never Say Never Again’ we can see Sean Connery wearing a plain boxer short riding a bicycle.
Our seersucker style JAMES (Navy and MBLue) takes Bond false plain fabrics suits as inspiration. Thousands of lines form a smart texture for one of our classic boxers. At same time, it is twisted with a navy checked gingham inner waist.

SPIROS FOCAS IS VINCE
Directed by the unique figure of Luchino Visconti in 1960, ‘Rocco and his Brothers’ reframes the socio-political texture of his seminal neo-realist work. This violent film tells the story of an immigrant family from the south of Italy and its disintegration in the society of the industrial north.
The Parondi family meets oldest son Vincenzo, who has already established himself in Milan. The family is thrown into chaos when two of the brothers are torn apart by their love for the same woman. Neighbour and prostitute Nadia (Annie Girardot) incites Simone (Renato Salvatori) to pursue a career in boxing as a fast way to reach fame and wealth. Rocco (Alain Delon) steps in behind him, starting a love affair with Nadia and also a successful boxing career (which he doesn’t even want). By the end, Simone lost his boxing career because of his obsession with Nadia, his alcoholism, and dissolute life style and he kills her in a jealous rage when she goes back to prostitution.
A haunting musical score by Nino Rota and the black & white film put a highly important aural background behind a movie that can be seen quite crearly as an enormous influence on great American gangster films.
Rocco’s brother Vincenzo gives the name to one of our favorite and best seller styles of this season: THE VINCE is a navy polka-dots boxer that reflects that daring yet elegant north italian men look.
BOXER UNION PLAYLIST #16
Our September playlist is dedicated to the Nordic countries. After paying tribute to London, New York and California in our latest months, now it’s time for the cold lands of the north of Europe: Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. We have made a selection of 20 songs that will help us to understand their singular identity, through the vision of 20 singers and bands from around the world, including among others Beach House, The Kinks, Of Montreal, Blonde Redhead or Muse; and also some nordic bands such as The Sugarcubes.
Nordic countries have much in common in their way of life, history, culture and social structure. In fact, they do not form a separate entity, but they co-operate in the Nordic Council. They all share a signature design style so cool nowadays, betting for minimalism and natural materials.

At this moment I´m in the mood of growing a small project set up with a partner. ‘Matchboys Collective’ is somenting similar to a clothing brand involving artists, surfers and skaters. We started a little over a year ago with our first collection. It all started from a blog of friends and today we have spring-summer and fall-winter collections, hoping to keep broadening in the future. It would say it all emerged from a mix of the thinks a like: travelling, surfing, skating, art, architecture, photography… and meeting inspiring people of all areas.
