BOXER UNION PLAYLIST #11

The term Chanson Française is since 1945 a musical genre that is defined primarily by the utilization of the French language, with reference to masters and models inherited from the French-language literature and poetry, as differentiation with Anglo-Saxon dominant forms in the music industry of the mid XX century.

The 50’s was the time to go back to literary sources and to endow primacy to the lyrics and social engagement. Charles Aznavour, Gilbert Becaud, Georges Brassens, Jacques Brel, Léo Ferré and, above all, Serge Gainsbourg, are some of the most important singer-songwriters of that decade. In the sixties lot of new teenagers and idols took on the musical scene, coinciding with the first economic revolution in the music industry. It was a turning point: people had the same age as their idols. Some of these young artists were Johnny Hallyday, Sylvie Vartan, Dalida, Eddy Mitchell, Claude Francois, Françoise Hardy, Jacques Dutronc, Christophe or France Gall.

We have tried to make a selection that intends to be a summary of some of the most French Chanson emblematic songs. From classics like Piaf, Brel or Aznavour to more innovative sounds such as Serge Gainsbourg, Nino Ferrer, Françoise Hardy or Joe Dassin. Listen our monthly playlist and feel yourself as if you were walking along the Seine enjoying la nuit parisienne.
