Starting in the mid-20th century, a new form of popular folk music evolved from that traditional folk music. This process and period is called the (second) folk revival and reached a zenith in the 1960s in Greenwich Village (New York) a quartier full of intellectuals and artists that evolved from jazz music to folk music.

Folk music includes both tradicional music (such as Bob Dylan, Mumford & Sons, Joan Baez or Cat Stevens) and the genre that evolved from it during the 20th century folk revival (including bands as Iron & Wine, Angus & Julia Stone or Fleet Foxes). Traditional folk is that kind of music transmitted by mouth, music of the lower classes, music with unknown composers or music performed by custom over a long period of time.
