BOXER UNION PLAYLIST #22
Malcom X autobiography brings us to Modern Classics 1965. That year some of the most contemporary pop music albums were released. Bands like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones or The Who published iconic pop-rock albums that are still fresh and alive. But also there were other important items: Bob Dylan goes electric and is booed at the Newport Folk Festival. The hits keep coming from Motown with The Supremes having three more #1 singles, plus #1 hits from The Temptations and The Four Tops. The Beatles played the largest concert to date (55,600 people) at New York City’s Shea Stadium. The British Invasion keeps delivering with new artists like Herman’s Hermits, The Dave Clark Five, The Yardbirds, The Who, Petula Clark and others scoring major hits. Also bands such as The Beach Boys and singers as Françoise Hardy or Astrud Gilberto released albums with great transcendence for the following decades.
In addition to music, 1965 was a fantastic year for industrial design. So many contemporary classics were introduced in several disciplines. Automobile industry added some marvelous cars. Porche 912, with a great aerodynamics, style and quality of construction, was an entry-level model and soon became a market leader. Aston Martin DB6 was announced at London Motor Show that October. The most noticeable styling changes from DB5 were the Kamm tail rear spoiler, which improved high speed stability. If we take a look across the bing pond, we should talk about Cadillac Calais, also an entry price car inspired by the french resort town.
James Bond film ‘Thunderball’ brought us two unique items. BSA Lightning motorbike fitted with missiles was ridden by Bond girl Fiona Volpe. The bike was designed as the all-round sports machine and made in Birmingham from 1965 to 1972. Brietling Top Time adorned Sean Connery´s wrist in the same film. Oris Diver watch was also introduced in 1965. It came with a 36 mm chromium-plated brass case, a bi-directional rotating bezel painted in black and a black plastic tropic design strap. The brand has launched a faithfulness reissue last year.
Last 1965 mentions are two iconic lamps: Spider Table by Joe Colombo was made from dark brown lacquered, chromed steel and aluminum. It is adjustable in height and the shade is rotatable. And Turbo pendant light by Louis Weisdorf, that uses a complex spiral of aluminum ribbons to create a ball-like but highly sculptural light.
