MATTHEW MODINE IS JOKER
Stanley Kubrick’s ‘Full Metal Jacket’ (1987) is arguably one the most influential of all Vietnam War movies, taking into account ‘Apocalyse Now’ (1979) and ‘Platoon’ (1986) too. It is based on the novel ‘The Short Timers’ by Gustav Hasford that had been in Vietnam as a Marine correspondent. Kubrick changed the title to “Full Metal Jacket,” inspired by the name of a kind of bullet commonly used by Marines in Vietnam.
This hyperreal movie is split in brutally into two parts: the film’s first half details the volunteers’ harrowing boot-camp training at Parris Island under the profane, power-saw guidance of drill instructor Sgt. Hartman. Part two takes place in Nam, as seen through the eyes of the now thoroughly indoctrinated marines. Ironically, it was filmed almost entirely in England.
The soundtrack counts with a fantastic selection of 1960s pop hits. Rolling Stones ‘Paint in Black’ is heard at the end of the movie. Same song would be used as the theme song for ‘Tour Of Duty’, a CBS show about the Vietnam War which ran from 1987-1989.
A movie full of well-known phrases, we definitely choose the words soldiers sing parading around in boxer shorts: ‘This is my rifle. This my gun. This is for fighting. This is for fun’. Our fill-a-fill light grey colour new model JOKER takes its name from the main character of the movie, played by Matthew Modine.
